Since we’re flooding your inbox with AIP information these days, we thought some of you might be asking yourselves “what exactly is the difference between the various diets?” Here’s a breakdown:
Here at Evolve, we try to make our food as inclusive as possible. We know that not all of our clients are strictly paleo, so we have recently started labeling which of our products are also Whole30, 21 Day Sugar Detox, Keto and AIP-friendly. If you’ve seen these labels on your items, here’s what they mean:
Whole30: very similar to paleo but excludes any added sugars (maple, honey, coconut sugar, etc). It also allows for potatoes, but since they are not paleo, we have not added them into the mix – even for our 30 Day Challenge.
21 Day Sugar Detox: similar to Whole30 and Paleo except it is very strictly no-sugar. This means no naturally occurring sugars either, like fruit and sweet potatoes. This is meant to completely remove sugar from your system and can help act as a restart for those who take in a lot of sugar from various sources.
Keto: requires less than 20 net carbs per day and is a high fat, high protein, low carb way of eating that allows your body to transition from using carbs for energy to using fat for energy. Your body begins to produce ketones when it runs out of glycogen stores and you start fueling your body with fat instead of carb which allows your glucose levels to remain level. The focus on keto is to consume high-quality meats and fats, as well as dense, nutrient-rich and low carb vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and dark leafy greens. Dairy is optional.
AIP (Auto-Immune Protocol): this is the most restrictive of eating plans that we support, but for very good reasons. It is meant to allow your gut to rest and heal, promoting all-over health as a result. This can also dramatically reduce the symptoms of AI diseases. It removes any potential irritants starting with the standard Paleo restrictions as well as removing eggs, nuts, seeds, nightshades, sugars, legumes, caffeine, and dried fruits. We will be talking about this more in the coming weeks, as we have an upcoming AIP 30 Day Challenge.
